Subject: Dolphin hunting in the Faroe Islands

Dear [YOUR MP’s/MSP’s NAME HERE],

I am writing in relation to the cruel and unnecessary practice of dolphin hunts in the Faroe Islands, which see over 1,100 of the marine mammals killed each year.

These inhumane hunts involve entire pods of these dolphins being driven, often for hours, towards the Faroese coastline by fishing and powerboats, before being killed on the beaches with lances and knives. The Faroese Chief Medical Officer and health authorities have advised against eating dolphin meat, meaning much of each animal is wasted.

The UK’s current trade deal with the Faroes Islands, agreed in 2019, sees over £182 million worth of Faroese fish imported into the UK each year, making its way onto supermarket shelves and menus in restaurants, schools and hospitals.

In contrast, the UK’s exports to the Faroe Islands are minimal (£19 million to the end of 2024), showing a significant trade imbalance between our two countries.

Despite the many consumers being outraged by the Faroese dolphin hunts, British supermarkets can hide the source of their Faroese fish products, labelling it as from the ‘North Atlantic’, leaving consumers unable to avoid consuming these fish products.

This is despite recent polling of British adults revealing 87 per cent think UK supermarkets should disclose which countries their products are sourced from, whilst 82 per cent believe the UK Government should consider animal welfare standards when negotiating trade agreements with other countries.

Britain has a proud record of strong leadership on animal welfare, helping enforce a global ban on commercial whaling within the International Whaling Commission.

Given that the wealthy Faroe Islands rely heavily on fish exports to the UK, there is a clear opportunity to review our free trade agreement with the Faroe Islands, if swift action to ban these cruel hunts is not forthcoming.

Therefore, will you write to the Trade Minister about the UK’s trading relationship with the Faroe Islands and write to the DEFRA Minister and raise the issue of supermarket labelling?

Thank you for your support and I look forward to your reply.

Yours sincerely,
